Residential Design

This residential design project was crafted over the course of the semester for my clients. This project was kicked off by meeting with my clients face to face and figuring out their design style and what they wanted out of this design project. This project was set up as a renovation where we used our professors house plans as the starting point. Within that we were also given constraints to the design for structural and practical reasons.

Key takeaways from Client Meeting:

-Cozy, warm & comfortable interior.

-Open concept flow from interior to exterior environment with nature as the main inspiration for the space.

-Use of natural elements and materials.

-Warm and neutral color pallet.

-Play with texture for strong visual appeal.

-Making the kitchen the heart of the home as they are big “Foodies” who love to cook and entertain.

-They have an extensive collection of art work that they would like incorporated in the design.

-Nature as the main design influence through the use of free forms and natural shapes throughout the design process.

-Clients sent photos of designs they liked and were drawn towards the Santa Fe style as they had there in the past.

After taking in all the information I decided to call their style:

Montanan Santa Fe.

(As this design took place in Bozeman, Montana).

Floor Plans:

Within the floor plans we had to come up with multiple options for our clients to choose from where we met with them several times throughout the course of this design making additional changes along the way and narrowing it down to finalized floor plans to their liking.

Above shows the concept statement, concept images and the floor plans for the first and second floor.

Custom Millwork:

Within the design we were challenged to come up with one custom millwork piece for our clients. My clients had mentioned that they would like some sort of library room as they have a large collection of books and like to read. Because there was limited space I decided to incorporate their library within their living room by creating a custom library wall to be the focal point of the room. This wall is 21′ tall at its highest point and I wanted to utilize all the space so I decided to create a glass hydraulic lift in order to reach the books at the very top instead of a ladder. Adjacent to this room on the second floor there is a balcony looking over. With this, the hydraulic lift can stop on the second floor level and clients can get off to act as an elevator as the clients mentioned to consider the factor of living in place as they grew older.

Below are some 2D and 3D mock ups of the Custom Library wall that I created using SketchUp.

This board includes a concept statement and mock ups for the Custom Library Wall as well as the Living Room Reflected Ceiling Plan (RCP) and Furniture Plan with visuals along side.

RCP’s and Furniture Plans:

Moving through the next part of the design is where I went room by room and presented the RCP and Furniture plans for each. In addition I created 3D mock ups with the use of SketchUp to give the clients a clear visual of my design of each room.

This board includes RCP’s, Furniture Plans and 3D visuals for the Dining room, Kitchen, Sun Room/Office and Front Entrance.

Finish Plan:

The Finish Plan shows a full floor plan and is coded with letters and numbers to the corresponding finish materials selected. These finishes include: flooring, paint, cabinets, countertop, stone and tile.

This board includes RCP’s, Furniture plans and 3D visuals for the Master Bedroom and Bathroom. As well as the Finish Plan for the main floor.

This concludes the finished product of my residential design project. This covers the surface level of what went into the design and for the sake of time and space was condensed onto these 4 boards to present it to my client in a timely matter. Each room of the house had a Reflected Ceiling Plan, Furniture Plan, Elevation and 3D visual that corresponds with the 2 Floor Plans and Finish Plans which was all given to the clients in an organized binder for further reference.

Hope you enjoyed following along this design!
